In the first talk at g39’s new venue Dan Rees will be talking about his new body of work inspired by the events and history of the town of Merthyr Tydfil. The video work, Merthyr Rising sees the artist following a trail to the edge of town towards the supermarket megastore Asda, which reportedly sold 78,000 pairs of white socks in one year, to a population of less than 55,000. The exhibition’s sculptural installation is a response to this style phenomenon which lead the artist to speculate on the rise of a new subcultural movement in this ex-mining community, deep in the Welsh Valleys.

Berlin based Rees is at the forefront of a new generation of British artists who share a specific understanding of the underlying aesthetics of Conceptual Art. The work displays an interest in linking the personal and anecdotal to a wider art historical context. Often employing a light-hearted and humorous approach, Rees incorporates the everyday and ephemeral subject matter into his work. Forthcoming and recent solo exhibitions include; National Museum of Wales, Cardiff; Baronian Francey, Brussels and ‘Merthyr Rising’, New Galerie, Paris (all 2012); ‘French Cricket’, Tanya Leighton Gallery, Berlin; ‘Shakin’ Peg Rails’, Wallspace New York (both 2010). Recent Group Exhibitions include; ‘Painting Show’, Eastside projects, Birmingham; ‘Outrageous Fortune, Focal Point gallery, Essex and ‘Keep Floors and Passageways Clear’, White Columns New York (all 2011).
